Creating social support for women refugees
The goal of our Twinning Program is to create social support for newly arrived woman refugees and to allow Montreal women to learn about the refugee experience firsthand. To that end, ARM matches refugee women with women volunteers in Montreal. Through regular meetings, the “twins” create bonds of friendship, exchange and solidarity. In addition we plan group activities at least once a month for all participants.
Participants for the Twinning Program are often referred to us by social workers, lawyers and other community organizations. Some are recently-arrived refugee claimants and some are sponsored refugees. Women volunteers from Montreal usually contact us because they want to help welcome newcomers into the community and learn about the challenges refugees face.
How to become a Twin
ARM’s Twinning Coordinator meets with women who are interested in becoming a twin to explain the program and discover their interests. Women who are selected to become twins are invited to participate in monthly group activities and are eventually matched with a twin. Twins usually meet for about 6 hours per month for a minimum of six months. Our Twinning Coordinator maintains monthly contact with both participants.
If you are interested in learning more about the program or in becoming a twin, please contact Jenny Jeanes, Twinning Program Coordinator at [email protected] or 514-935-7799.
