Volunteer

Action Réfugiés Montréal relies on a team of over 40 volunteers each year, including members of our Board of Directors

Most volunteer opportunities are in the Twinning and Detention programs.

Board of Directors

New Board members are elected each year at our Annual General Meeting. For information about our Board, please contact Paul Clarke, Executive Director.

Twinning Program

ARM-320x240-VolunteerAction Réfugiés Montréal’s Twinning Program brings together newly arrived refugee women with women volunteers living in Montreal to create bonds of friendship, exchange and solidarity. Each refugee woman is matched with a volunteer and the two women spend at least six hours together each month. Activities may include social or cultural outings, discovering helpful resources in Montreal, or spending time getting to know each other.

Group activities are offered by Action Réfugiés Montréal at least once each month to bring together participants. Past activities have included yoga, collective cooking, painting, skating, conferences on employment and housing, and an outing to a Sugar Shack.

Training and support are provided to volunteers. Please note that most activities are held in French.

Potential volunteers must

  • Be available at least 10 hours per month (including individual and group activities)
  • Be available for a minimum of 6 months
  • Respect confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest
  • Have some experience working with vulnerable and diverse populations

As most training and group activities are held in French, bilingualism (English and French) is preferred.

For more information about the Twinning Program or to apply to volunteer, please email Jenny Jeanes, Detention and Twinning Program Coordinator. Please note that we receive a large number of volunteer inquiries and are not able to include everyone who contacts us in the program. We try to find volunteers who correspond to the profiles of the refugee women waiting to be twinned.

Detention Review Hearings

A small team of volunteers observe Detention Review Hearings at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Anyone detained for immigration reasons is seen by the Immigration Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board on a regular basis to determine if the person can be released or if detention will be maintained. Action Réfugiés Montréal offers accompaniment to people we meet in the Immigration Holding Centre during our weekly visits.

Training is provided by the Detention Program Coordinator, who coordinates the schedule of hearing accompaniments. Hearings take place Monday to Friday at 9 am, 10 am or 1:15 pm at the Complexe Guy-Favreau (200 René-Lévesque West) and usually last between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Potential volunteers must

  • Be available for a minimum of three months (some exceptions possible)
  • Be bilingual (English and French) as hearings are held in either language
  • Respect confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest
  • Have a capacity to understand complex legal information

Detention Visits

Action Réfugiés Montréal visits people detained in the Immigration Holding Centre in Laval, Québec on a weekly basis to provide legal information, emotional support, and other forms of assistance. Due to the complexity of cases, the vulnerability of some detainees and the need to obtain security clearance, ARM relies mainly on trained staff and interns for detention visits. Occasionally, volunteers may also participate in detention visits.

Potential volunteers must

  • Be available for a minimum of 6 months
  • Be bilingual (English and French) – additional languages an asset
  • Respect confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest
  • Have a capacity to understand complex legal information
  • Have experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Be able to obtain the required security clearance (must be Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen)

For more information about the Detention Program or to apply to volunteer please email Jenny Jeanes.

If you are interested, please send a CV to Zehra Kavame and indicate your interest or experience. We keep a list of potential volunteers who we may contact as needs arise. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate all requests.
