Compassion and Justice for Refugees

Action Réfugiés Montréal is a strong voice for refugees in Montréal and beyond.

We seek justice for asylum-seekers and refugees. We promote partnerships among refugees, faith communities and society at large for mutual empowerment. Through our programs we provide hope and assistance while raising awareness of refugee rights.

Sponsorship Program

IMPORTANT NOTICE: On January 9th, 2017, the Ministry of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion announced a Suspension of acceptance of new sponsorship applications as of January 27, 2017. Please read the official notice here. We regret that we will be unable to start any new files in 2017 until further notice.

ARM has a private sponsorship program, where people in the Montreal region can sponsor family members who are living in a refugee situation overseas. ARM supports approved sponsors in order to prepare their files and offers follow-up services during the duration of the sponsorship period. All services are provided free of charge.

Detention program

Through Action Réfugiés Montréal’s Detention Program, we provide support to people detained for immigration reasons at the Laval Immigration Holding Centre. Action Réfugiés Montréal is the only organization to visit the Laval IHC on a weekly basis to provide support to detainees.

Twinning program

The goal of our Twinning Program is to create social support for newly arrived woman refugees and to allow Montréal women to learn about the refugee experience firsthand. ARM matches refugee women with women volunteers and through regular meetings, the “twins” create bonds of friendship and solidarity.

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

April 4th, the Canadian Council for Refugees organized a lobby day in Ottawa on family reunification. Twenty representatives went to visit MPs and Senators to speak to them about obstacles to reunification, such as very long delays even for young separated children. Jenny and Martine (a long-time participant of our twinning program) participated and met with 4 MPs: Alexandre Boulerice, Minh Quach, Sheila Malcolmson and François Choquette. Plus an unexpected meeting in the rain!
